Leadership Means Losing the Right to Make Excuses

The Shift That Changes Everything

One quote I return to often is this:

“When you become a leader, you must lose the right to make excuses.” — Simon Sinek

Leadership isn’t about blame. It’s about responsibility, especially when things go wrong.

What This Looks Like

At Township Design, if something misses the mark, I own it. Not because I enjoy taking the blame, but because I want to create a culture of accountability.

That means:

  • No finger-pointing
  • No deflecting
  • No hiding behind “well, someone else didn’t…”

Excuses protect the ego. Ownership builds trust.

Ask Yourself:

  • Where am I still making excuses?
  • What would change if I treated everything as my responsibility, even when it wasn’t my fault?

Ownership is the currency of leadership.
It’s what earns trust and makes space for real progress.
